Types of Migraines

Ten percent of people suffer from migraines. The simple clinical definition of a migraine is a severe unprovoked headache lasting between 4 and 72 hours that prohibits routine activity and includes nausea or light sensitivity. However, anyone who has suffered from a migraine knows that there is so much more to a migraine that the definition covers. Migraine relief comes in many forms, including chiropractic adjustment. At Brainard Chiropractic, our chiropractor has years of experience providing residents of Fremont, NE, and the surrounding areas with chiropractic care for migraine relief.

Migraine With Aura

This type of migraine is often called a classic migraine. An aura is a visual or a sensory disturbance that either comes before or at the same time as a migraine headache. Auras take several different forms. A visual aura can include shooting lights, zigzag lines, limited peripheral vision, blind spots and other visual disruptions. An aura may also include tingling in the hands and face, and the inability to speak clearly. In some cases, an aura is an early warning system that reminds you to take your medication before the actual headache hits. 10 to 30 percent of migraines are this type.

Migraine Without Aura

Also known as common migraines, migraines without aura are the most common type of migraine, affecting 70 to 90 percent of migraine sufferers. These headaches are usually on one side of the head and last between 4 and 72 hours. Nausea and sensitivity to light are common symptoms.

Hemiplegic Migraine

This is a rare type of migraine that includes weakness on one side of the body and in some ways mimics a stroke. Speech can become difficult. Hemiplegic migraines also induce confusion and visual problems.

Retinal Migraine

This is a unique type of migraine as it only affects one eye. It can cause partial or total blindness which comes on before or during the headache itself. Vision loss usually lasts less than an hour.
