Common Questions About "Text Neck"

Text Neck: Frequently Asked Questions

Are you living with persistent neck pain that seems to get worse throughout the day? If so, you may be suffering from text neck, a relatively new condition characterized by neck pain that occurs while looking downward. At Brainard Chiropractic in Fremont, NE, we specialize in the treatment of text neck and receive quite a lot of questions about the condition. Below, we have outlined a few of our most frequently asked questions to help you better understand text neck and what types of treatment can help alleviate your discomfort.

1. What Exactly Is Text Neck and How Does It Occur?

Text neck is an uncomfortable neck condition brought about by looking downward for extended periods of time. Typically, the condition develops in individuals who spend large amounts of time looking at mobile devices, but it can also develop as a result of looking downward while using other electronic devices, such as tablets or laptops.

2. I Live With Neck Pain — How Do I Know If I Have Text Neck?

If you have neck discomfort and spend several hours each day looking downward at a mobile device, tablet, or computer, the neck pain you are experiencing is likely caused by text neck. That said, scheduling an assessment with a chiropractor will allow you to get a full diagnosis, so you can know for sure whether you suffer from text neck.

3. How Can I Alleviate Pain Associated With Text Neck?

If an assessment determines your discomfort is due to text neck, here are a few simple techniques you can use to alleviate your pain:

  • Take breaks. If you must spend long periods using a mobile device or computer, take frequent breaks to allow your neck to rest.
  • Position your screen at eye level. Whether you are using a mobile device, a tablet, or a computer, position the screen at eye level while you work or browse. This allows your cervical spine to remain in a more neutral position that does not place excessive stress on the tissues and vertebrae in the neck.
  • Stretch. During your screen breaks, gently stretch your neck. You can do this by slowly rolling your head toward one shoulder and then back toward the other shoulder. Repeat the motion several times before reversing the movement and rolling your head from shoulder to shoulder while looking upward.

4. Does a Chiropractor Treat Text Neck?

Yes! A chiropractor can help alleviate pain associated with text neck using multiple treatment modalities, including chiropractic adjustments and massage. Working with a chiropractor can also help you develop better posture, which you can implement while using your mobile device or computer. This will allow your neck to remain in a more neutral position, so you can better maintain the results of your chiropractic treatments.
