The Cause Behind Text Neck

Due to our eyes being constantly glued down to our phones and screens throughout the day, over time this posture can lead to stress on our neck and spine leading to pain and discomfort. Pay attention next time you are gazing at your phone. Are you hunched over? Is your head drooping down? Exactly!

Preventions

Don’t want to develop text neck? Here are some ways you can help prevent it.

  1. Sit up straight, chest out and shoulders back. Pay attention to posture.
  2. Be mindful to lift your phone up to eye level. Avoid head drooping down thus lessening the extra strain on your neck.
  3. In a heated texting debate and have a lot to say? If caught in a long lengthy text battle, try placing a pillow under your arms for support.

Exercises

When taking a break from your phone try performing these exercises to help keep your neck and shoulder muscles strong.

  • Chest Stretch — Stand up and with your arms at their sides rotate them till your thumbs are facing away or pointing behind you.
  • Exaggerated Nod — This exercise is set to help counterattack against the drooping head looking down action. You can do it standing or sitting. Relax your jaw opening your mouth up. Tilting your head back then have your lower jaw rise up to meet your top jaw.
  • Chin Tuck — Aimed to strengthen the neck muscles and realign the neck with the spine. Sitting up straight without moving your head tuck your chin in slowly. Imagine a string is pulling your head up like your neck is getting elongated. You should feel the soothing stretch. Repeat a couple of times.
