Tips for Proper Posture

Slouching & a standing woman

Proper Posture Takes Practice

Even if you feel fine and comfortable with how you sit and stand, your posture may not be the best. That's not unusual. A lot of people have at least some posture-related areas where they could improve. Good posture takes practice, especially if you have years of bad posture habits to deal with. A chiropractor at Brainerd Chiropractic in Fremont can help you work on your posture.

Bad Posture Can Lead to Pain

Over time, bad posture, or even less-than-optimal posture, can lead to pain. Sometimes this is acute pain that needs immediate treatment from a doctor, but other times it's chronic pain that starts off as very mild and builds. Before you know it, you're dealing with headaches, achy backs and hips, and wonky shoulders.

To avoid developing these problems, keep the following in mind:

  • Try to shift your weight from front to back and so on if you have to stand for a long time.
  • Try not to slouch.
  • Talk to your workplace's ergonomics representative about correct sitting posture and computer use at your desk.
  • Try to keep your knees bent a little, and stand with your feet at shoulder's-width distance when you can.
  • Try not to cross your legs when sitting (that's one you might not follow all the time, but do try).
  • Get pillows meant to keep your head and neck properly aligned when you sleep.
  • Use a footrest at your desk if your feet can't reach the floor.
  • Try to keep your body relatively relaxed. Your muscles should support your body, but not be tensed all the time.

Practice Good Posture When You Can

People have their own habits when it comes to sitting and standing, and it may seem unnatural to you to try to have good posture all the time. Do your best to practice it when you can. Contact Brainerd Chiropractic in Fremont at (402) 727-8668 for more information.
